Let's Move On

Let's Move-On.

I will give Hillary the benefit of the doubt.

I will extend my hand in friendship.

I hope Clinton supporters are able to meet this standard, some day in the future, when someone on Obama's team makes a mistake.  And it will happen.  Human make mistakes.  It's unavoidable, even under the best of circumstances.

A few weeks ago, a couple of bloggers tried to gin up a phony outrage, saying Barack gave Hillary the finger during a speech.

What disappointed me the most, was not the actions a hand full of hardliners.  No, it was how so many regular, everyday, Clinton supporters remained silent during an obvious smear.

As late as last night, a noted Clinton supporter was still trying smear Obama as unAmerican on this blog.

I hope in the future, when some error occurs (ie samantha power, bittergate), you speak up, forcefully, and call on your fellow teammates to move on.

It's time to move-on and focus on McCain.

Re: Let's Move On (2.00 / 2)

Hear, hear, hear.

Clinton dug her own mess with this and it will probably be her last gasp. I don't think piling on a bunch of her supporters who are still trying to get used to the fact that she's not going to get the nomination isn't going to help matters and will turn this place into a pit of flame, which is just going to draw more anti-Obama trolls to come fuel it. Let's ease back on the throttle.

Re: Let's Move On (none / 0)

But I have a different take. I'm GRATEFUL to Hillary. I've heard this SO many times, especially from African American friends. This is the big fear, and legacy of the 60s. We must defeat this fear that the right holds all the cards, and weapons.

Hillary is not to blame for this statement. The 60s are. And FORTY years later, you are all facing down this fear. I know Hillary meant no ill by it, but was just reflecting her own experience of political violence.

It's better talked about than repressed. It's the last taboo - one I've heard from all shades of the democratic spectrum. Let's air it now, and dismiss.

I second this (2.00 / 1)

I am calmer now and think the best thing to do is to move on.

I hope that Clinton supporters think twice before smearing Obama with lies or false rumors. I hope this makes you think twice before being outraged at the word "bitter".

It would be cool to stop the attacks on B.O. and his supporters over this matter too. It just makes you look weak and stupid. Why would Barack Obama be responsible for Hillary's word?

This was a gaffe and it was unfortunate.

Move on?  Surely, you jest.

This is just the beginning of a deluge of diaries placing the blame for this squarely where it belongs... on Obama and his campaign.

You're a good man, Al.  My father is in tears right now, as this ripped open the well of emotion that he, like everyone else, tried to bury deep within us.  We know this could happen to Obama, but we just can't think of it.  Some of us are thinking of it, and it's ripping my old man up right now.

He worked on RFK's campaign.

I can't describe how much I'm grateful for this diary, Al.  We need to acknowledge this, accept that the reality it what it is, and move on.  The scabs are too ripe for so many Americans.

I'm not beating her up over it (2.00 / 1)

I guess I took her comments as "it's ok for primaries to go into June" which I would disagree with, but I definitely didn't take the comments as "Obama could die"

I'm laying off of her. I think this is a situation where she's being misinterpreted (it's happened to my candidate more times that I can count on my hand, so)

Repeating myself (none / 0)

"To believe that Senator Clinton meant what many are claiming she meant is absolutely absurd.  She was a friend of mine before this campaign and will be a friend of mine after.  I have decried the gotcha games that have been played throughout this campaign and I must do so in this instance.  Instead of focusing on a comment that she now wishes she had articulated better, why don't you focus on the desire of John McCain's desire to continue George Bush's disastrous foreign policy, a policy that has not made us safer and has emboldened our enemies, or his desire to perpetuate George Bush's economic policy, a policy that has left our economy in shambles."

If Obama gets before a camera in the next hour or two and makes some statement similar to this effect, it's a total political winner for him.

Don't worry, it's okay.

Hell, I blew my top, when I first heard this.  We're only flesh and blood.  We all say things in the heat of the moment.  It's afterwards when we have to rise above and put these things behind us.  Just like any family, fights happens, people hurt each other.  It's only strangers or enemies who don't make up.

Well, I've blown my top, too, so I can't really blame you. I certainly appreciate your fair-mindedness.

And I hope you post a diary with lots of eye-candy in it soon. (Though not this one, perhaps, since I think it would detract from your message.) I'm sure we'd all feel better. Everyone loves candy.

Thanks Al. I came out against Fingergate and I'm glad to see that we all want to move past the "gotcha" era of this primary and get things going to beat McCain.

Yeah .. I've already commented on one of the first threads  that this was not filled with malice.

But given how many times the Hillary campaign has turned small issues into really big one's I guess it's justice served.

However I wish that she not quit campaigning because of this. There should be no excuses on  who the winner was.  I want June 3rd to play out and for her and her supporters to realized that she lost this one all on her own.  Perhaps we will have an united front come November.

Re: Let's Move On (none / 0)

That's the spirit, Al!

It's all too easy for people to fall into the habit of scoring a point just because they can.  In reality, politics would be much healthier if we didn't all get caught up in what Bob Somerby calls "the Cult of the Offhanded Comment."

I will say this:  I always found it very, very hard to take people seriously once they bring up the "middle finger" thing.  For some reason, a primary election always involves constructing an alternate reality where the opposing candidate is a total comic-book villain.
